The Galway Zombie Photowalk 2010 happened tonight… a fun evening out in Galway

A shot taken in May 2008 out at Kylemore Abbey in really glorious sunshine. The lake was espeically low, allowing me to kneel on the shore.

I just happened across this cycle race happening in Galway this evening, took a few abstract snaps!

Since the round-Ireland boats were about as exciting for the Salthill Prom spectators as a tea break on a wet Monday morning….. in Febrary…… during the great depression, I shot the P-750 racers in Salthill as they entertained the gathered spectators!

The Galway Open canoe polo competition was held in the Claddagh Basin today- I was down mostly shooting video but I of course took some stills, too- enjoy!

On my trip to Inis Meain I met a group of Japanese guys who were in Galway for the weekend doing some sightseeing! We went out to McDonagh’s on Sunday evening when I returned, and we went to McSwiggan’s for some food on the bank holiday Monday night.  This was taken in Eyre Square with my new 500D and the 50mm 1.8

I just finished this promo piece for  Central Park in Galway ; I did the intro & outro anims; the 3d Architectural Previs was by All3d here in Galway. The 3d work was done using 3d Studio Max 9 and Vray, post-production was done using Adobe After Effects and a little bit of Photoshop.

Signing up to the course and passing the exam gets you an ICU level 2 Certificate plus membership for the rest of the year. There’s no better way to start kayaking!

The final day of the Kayak Intervarsities 2010 saw everyone head for the Boluisce River in Spiddal for the whitewater boatercross event.

NUIG Kayak Club are hosting this year’s Irish Kayak Intervarsities, I tagged along to grab a few shots of the flatwater and freestyle rodeo. Tuam wasn’t working because of a lack of rain, so the rodeo was held out at Clifden. Enjoy!

I took a bit of a walk today in the sun, tried out some street photography for the first time in ages, it was a really great day for it.

Of course, not everyone appreciates is in a fit state to enjoy the morning after the night before.

These windmills are set into Irish bogland, a place where peat is traditionally cut from the ground, dried and then burned. A new energy source built on top of an ancient one.

Everyone seems to be waiting for a thaw but I’m loving the snow. Day 3 in the tundra, this time out in Glencull, near Ballygawley. You can normally see the neighbouring towns of Augher, Clogher and Aughnacloy from up this high, but the fog in the valleys means there’s no chance of that this week.

Day two at home and the promised thaw didn’t materialise. Time to crawl out of bed and suit up again!

While The West was flooded and The North frozen in November and December I remained sheltered in Galway City. My first bit of snow exposure this winter in at least 5 years came when I got stuck on the bus between Sligo and Eniskillen on the way home for Christmas…. fortunately we were rescued and made it home in time for Turkeyfest ‘09. These were all taken just outside Ballgawley, Tyrone

Ali Donald (of Saoirse Na Mara), Donnacha Quilty and some of their buddies put on a real show for the frigid shoppers on Sunday afternoon, surfing on the wave at O’Brien’s Bridge in Galway. I was given a heads up beforehand so arrived with a big bag of camera gear and a lot of warm waterproof clothing. Well worth it!

So it’s been two months since I got my diver’s licence, but I hadn’t used it yet. Nor did I get any good underwater pics yet. Time to rectify both those things! I went for a shore dive to 10 meters in the morning with my shiny new Canon Powershot D10, and took a few pics and videos on the way.  The second dive was beyond the camera’s waterproof rating, so I took no chances and left it behind on the boat while I went off with my Finnish dive buddy Nina, who was far too complimentary of my newbie ways. The weather was amazing, too- it was windy out, and only about 10 degrees but the winter sun had a blue sky to play with, making visiblity at depth pretty good for the conditions (maybe 8 meters).

I saw the milky way clearly tonight from Connemara National Park, but couldn’t quite take advantage as I left my remote release cable at home…… aw well, here’s a  30 second exposure at ISO 1600.

I took a day trip to Inis Meain with some friends and my camera… the weather was beautiful but I forgot my sunscreen… paid for that one later!  This was with Haruka and her sister Akiko, we took the ferry over in the morning, spent the day wandering around and just caught the ferry back.  A great day.

The evenings are getting darker, but as long as there’s a bit of blue sky showing it’s worth rushing to get the sunset.
I do need to start bringing a tripod, though!

I’ve been biking it down the prom recently in an attempt to get my fitness up again; I’ve been taking the camera and on Friday afternoon it paid off…

Okay, so I’m up in Scuba Dive West for the week doing the PADI open water divers’ couse… the course is going great (have managed not to drown, anyway!)…..  took this on Monday Night in Letterfrack, where I’m staying.
